Starting a new hobby as a (sort-of) adult

When you think about the word ‘hobby’, usually two different scenarios come to mind. You either imagine children, going to gymnastics and swimming clubs, or older people collecting stamps and bird watching. It’s not often that having a hobby is considered an ‘adult’ thing to do as it’s widely accepted that adults are very busy – they don’t have time for extra curricular activities.

I’m at a weird stage in my life where I am absolutely not an adult (can’t cook, live with parents, scared of making phone calls) but at the same time, completely am (engaged, full time job, steady income). So I’ve hit a little bit of a rut. I’ve been in the same job for almost three years, slowly progressing, but still not sure what I want to do with my life.

It doesn’t help that I’m still in the same mindset from my teenage years. I love to learn and I feel stale when I haven’t discovered something new for a while. I want to develop new skills and try new things, but as far away from a ‘school’ environment as possible. All whilst working 40 hours a week.

Luckily I do have a lot of free time. Unlike the majority of young professionals, I don’t have a long commute to work. I also only work office hours, leaving the entire weekend open.

So what have I chosen to fill that time, and add a little excitement to my daily life?

Two words - Ice skating. Yep, my lazy and utterly ungraceful self has not only started going to public skating sessions, but I've even convinced my best friend to sign up with me for proper lessons too. How hilarious is that? But in all honesty, it's something that I've always wanted to do since I was about eleven, but it was never feasible at the time. Lessons were too expensive for my parents to pay for. Good ice skates cost upwards of £100. And I couldn't expect my dad to drive me 20 miles each way three times a week, so I just forgot about it.

Ten years later, I now have the income to afford lessons, equipment and clothing. I drive and can make my own way to lessons and practice sessions, without having to rely on bus timetables or my parents taking me (although my gorgeous fiancé has run me around a lot so far.) I have the determination and motivation to learn something new, and to my absolute delight I seem to be quite good at it, which inspires me further.

I've made a lot of mistakes already. I've discovered that my technique is all wrong, the cheap skates I bought aren't right, and it simply isn't practical to turn up to the rink wearing only a dress and thin tights, but I'm learning and that's what matters.

I'm really excited to see where this takes me, especially as for the last two weeks it's been all I can think about. I've been constantly researching tips, watching technique videos and posting in adult ice skating Facebook groups for advice.

I'm hoping this won't just be a fad, and will become something that I am genuinely proud of and can enjoy for a long time.

  1. That’s so cool that you’re finally getting to do something you’ve always wanted! Ice skating is beautiful to watch, I’ve only ever been a couple of times so I’m not sure I’d be any good but I would give it a try. I totally agree with you though about not viewing hobbies as an adult thing, so I’m glad you broke the stereotype! Hope you continue to enjoy!x

  3. I used to do dance as a kid and when I was about 14 I stopped, I was a teenager and all my classes were on a Saturday morning. But I really regretted it, then I joined the dance societies at my university in my last year and have really got back into dance! I now go to two adult classes at my sisters dance school!

It’s never too late to start something, new or old!

  6. Lol at being an almost adult I feel the same way! Pretty proud of you for choosing ice skating of all things as a hobby, talk about a cool skill set to acquire. I’ve only ever done ice skating once which was last Christmas. I mastered how to go backwards but for some strange reason I can’t move forward to easily but I really can’t wait to try again later this year, it was hard but a lot of fun! I hope you keep up with your hobby and become an ice princess haha

  7. Oh wow you are so brave. I am so scared of ice skating. I tried once, never again. But maybe I just didn't get the training I would have needed. It is a very demanding hobby but i assume very rewarding

  10. That's so exciting! I agree that learning new things is kinda challenging as you get older and life gets in the way but I love that you're doing something you've wanted to do for ages! I'd love to learn to ice skate but I have hip issues and couldn't risk a fall! x

  12. What an incredible hobby to take up! I absolutely adore ice skating and I'm not *too* bad at it and I would have always loved to have had proper skating lessons but I didn't manage to do it when I was younger for very similar reasons to you! I hope you really enjoy learning to ice skate properly and I can't wait to see how well you do! xx

  13. It's great that you're finally able to do something you've always wanted to. I tried ice skating once, loved it, but didn't stick with it. Why? Adults get busy. I'm going to try and get myself a new hobby that fits in with my current routine, maybe ice skating, maybe a cake decorating class. Great post. x

  16. I would say you’re right on the adult thing - not everyone has a lot of time between work/studies etc. but I think having a hobby as an adult is actually really fun - partially because it’s like will I have time today to squeeze XYZ in and then squeezing it in somehow when you thought you wouldn’t have the time for It.

I can definitely say I relate - I love to learn and discover new things, it’s always fun trying new things and seeing how you progress as time goes on and then finding a new challenge to do when the previous one becomes as easy was lacing your shoes.

YAY ICE SKATING - I’ve been thinking of getting a pair of skates! I’m always in awe at figure skaters, I love ice skating but all I can do is skate forward and loop around the rink- it’s awesome that you’ve rediscovered your love for the sport!

Wish you all the luck in your lessons!

  17. that’s so exciting that you have started skating lessons! i think it’s wonderful that you have decided to take up a hobby even as an adult. I never really thought about how most adults don’t have actual hobbies but it’s so nice that you broke out of that norm and went after one. and one that will be good for your physical health as well! even better. can’t wait to hear how your lessons go as you keep learning xx

  18. That's amazing you found ice skating! I remember I was in the same boat trying to find a creative hobby. I ended up finding digital scrapbooking and loooove it! Such a nice way to stimulate my creativity and relax.

  19. That's so cool that you've gone back to something you've always wanted to do. Keep pushing and keep making mistakes. That's the only way we learn, right? I feel lied to though after seeing all those Disney movies where they're only prancing around in tights, leotards and the tutus! haha! ;) Keep at it. Can't wait to hear about your progress!
